You and your family are invited to enter a world of knowledge, learning and fun at the West Deptford Free Public Library. Come in and enjoy the friendly atmosphere, great collections, state of the art technology, unique services and array of programs.
The library collections, which number more than 72,000 items for children, teens and adults, include: audio books on cassette and compact disc; books in paperback, hard cover and large print formats; electronic subscription databases; magazines and newspapers; maps; mail-order catalogs; vertical file materials; resources for the physically challenged; music on cassette and compact disc; NJ documents; NJ phone books; puzzles and puppets; reference sources; software; tax forms; and videos/DVDs. All of these items are free to West Deptford residents and non-resident library members.
The library is also a member of LOGIN, a group of libraries in Gloucester and Salem Counties who share their resources through a computerized bibliographic database. Residents with West Deptford Library cards can now go to and borrow materials from the fourteen other libraries that belong to LOGIN.
Computers are plentiful and loaded with software applications to meet the needs of library users of all ages. Sign-up for computer classes which include but are not limited to an introduction to computers, word processing, desktop publishing, e-mail, spreadsheet development, and navigating the Internet. Bring in your laptop and connect to the Internet through the library’s wireless network or use the library’s laptop in-house.
Are you researching a topic? Try out the library’s many on-line subscription databases. They provide accurate and up to date information on a variety of topics for both child and adult. With the databases, you can locate fiction books based on a reader’s interests, news articles both current and as far back as 1940, tax forms and science experiments on-line, TV and radio transcripts, photography and maps, as well as magazines, reference books and newspapers.
Check out the library’s web page on the World Wide Web: www.westdeptford.lib.nj.us. From the web page you can search the library’s catalog. You can even monitor and perform transactions to your library account. All you need is access to an on-line computer. Also from the library’s web page you can gain access to “Q and A NJ,” a network of experienced New Jersey librarians offering free live, interactive search assistance 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Programs and services are free and plentiful at the library. Enjoy monthly art displays in the gallery and display cases. Come yourself and bring the family and friends to programs offered daily for all ages. Programs and services for the 2004/2005 season featured preschool story hours, after school programs, Red Cross Babysitting, VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance), concerts and sing-alongs and family programs (magic, puppet, and animal shows, origami, to name a few). Adults enjoyed “how-to” programs such as lawn care, cooking, fishing, boat safety, parenting and health.
The South Jersey Environmental Center is located within the library. The center provides environmental information in books, videos, governmental documents, specialized databases and periodicals.
The library would not be what it is today without the help of the dedicated volunteers who are members of an organization called Friends of the West Deptford Public Library. The Friends support the library through various activities. Their mission is to encourage maximum usage of the library’s resources and services. Included in their regular activities are a Book Discussion Group and a Used Book Sale. The Friends meet the third Wednesday of the month at 7:30 p.m. in the library’s meeting room.
